Tuesday June 23, 2026 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is conducting an ongoing safety review of inferior vena cava filters, known as IVC filters. After receiving hundreds of adverse event reports, the FDA identified an “emerging device safety issue” and announced warnings to doctors and patients about potential complications following vein filter surgery.

IVC Filter Lawyers Allege Defective Design

IVC filters are small, cage-like devices used to capture blood clots and prevent them from reaching the heart and lungs. They are typically used when blood thinners would be ineffective or are contraindicated in a patient’s case.

Medical studies now show, however, that serious injuries can result when these devices are implanted and remain in the body, including:

  • Filter fracture
  • Embolization
  • Perforation of vessel wall
  • Filter migration
  • Infection
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Death

The FDA advised in May 2014 that retrievable vein filters should be removed between 29 and 54 days after implantation to attempt to avoid these and other serious injuries.

Our lawyers are reviewing evidence that the manufacturers of IVC filters were aware of such risks prior to the FDA warnings yet continued to promote these devices to surgeons.

Among other claims, the pending lawsuits allege that the design of IVC filters is unreasonably dangerous and that certain manufacturers knew their devices were prone to failure.
