  • Dislocation

Stryker Hip Recall: LFIT V40

During a total hip replacement, the head of the femur bone is removed and replaced with a prosthetic ball.

This prosthetic ball can be composed of either ceramic or metal.

Defects have recently been identified with some metal heads.

On August 24th 2016, Health Canada initiated a recall for specific lots of Stryker’s LFIT Anatomic CoCr V40 femoral heads.

On August 29th, Stryker began notifying U.S. surgeons directly of a recall for these same components.

The LFIT V40 is a metal head composed of cobalt and chromium.

The defect arises at the juncture where the ball connects to the stem of the femur. This part of the implant is known as the taper lock.

When the taper lock fails, patients can experience pain, joint instability, and tissue necrosis, as well as systemic harm such as metal ion poisoning.

In September 2016, Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) issued a “Hazard Alert” to warn physicians and consumers in Australia about the taper lock defect.

Litigation is now developing across the United States. At this time, the company has not offered voluntary compensation to victims. Accordingly, injured patients must file a lawsuit in order to recover their legal damages.
