Celexa (citalopram) is in a class of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. These popular drugs are used to treat depression by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain to help maintain mental balance.

Medical studies suggest, however, that Celexa and other SSRIs can cause an increased risk of birth defects in newborns whose mothers use the drugs during pregnancy. The ongoing Celexa lawsuit seeks to compensate victims and their families for serious congenital anomalies including:

  • Cardiac defects
  • Neural tube defects
  • Limb reduction defects
  • Anal atresia
  • Cleft lip
  • Cleft palate

Celexa lawsuits allege the manufacturer of the drug was aware of a heightened risk of birth defects but failed to adequately warn patients and doctors.

Celexa Class Action Lawsuit

A Celexa class action lawsuit has not been established for victims of birth defects. Instead, each Celexa birth defects lawsuit is filed separately and litigated according to the unique facts of each case. In the absence of a Celexa class action, potential claimants are encouraged to consult a drug injury attorney about their individual case and understand their legal options.

Celexa Lawsuit Settlement

Similarly, a Celexa lawsuit settlement has not been announced for birth defect victims. Rather, as litigation continues, individual Celexa settlements can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis between Celexa lawyers and the drug’s manufacturer. In the future, the parties may consider a Celexa lawsuit settlement program that could more efficiently resolve cases nationwide, though no such program has been established to date.
