Risperdal Lawsuit Information
Hundreds of men and boys have filed a Risperdal lawsuit to seek compensation for male breast growth and other serious side effects.
Risperdal is a powerful antipsychotic medication primarily used in the treatment of schizophrenia, autism, and bipolar disorder. When administered to young boys and male adolescents, however, Risperdal can cause a heightened risk of gynecomastia (abnormal breast growth). Users also report drastic weight gain and cases of new-onset diabetes.
Risperdal lawsuits allege that drug makers were aware of these risks but failed to adequately warn patients and doctors, while at the same time improperly marketing the medication for use in children and adolescents. The developing Risperdal litigation aims to compensate these vulnerable patients and their families for significant legal damages.
Understanding the Risperdal Class Action
While the Risperdal litigation involves cases from all over the country, the claims are not structured as a Risperdal class action lawsuit. Instead each victim files an individual Risperdal lawsuit in the appropriate state or federal court. These separate cases are then litigated and compensated according to the unique facts of each case and the personal harm suffered by the individual plaintiff.
At the same time, individual Risperdal lawsuits may be coordinated with one another for more efficient pretrial proceedings. For instance, over 600 claims have been grouped as a “mass tort” in the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas (Case No. 1003-00296). The mass tort program shares some similarities with a Risperdal class action but allows each plaintiff to pursue the full extent of his legal damages and individually resolve his claim by settlement or other means.
Risperdal Settlement News
The first Risperdal lawsuit settlement was reported in September 2012. In that case, the 21-year-old plaintiff had used Risperdal as a child from 2000 to 2004. He sought damages for psychological trauma and physical injuries after developing breasts that required surgical removal. Since that time, at least 80 additional Risperdal settlements have been reached between the drug companies and individual claimants. The settlement amounts ultimately agreed to in each case are treated as confidential.
